A poem for Grandad by Sarah and Emma….
This poem is about our Grandad, “Titchie” May
And our chance for you to hear what we want to say
He taught us how to live our lives
And ways to cope and always survive
Whatever has happened he’s been there
He really was very rare
Grandad was a natural when it came to rhyme
And when we were old enough he spent his time
Moulding us into bright young poets
With the fruits of his labour in this poem to show it!
Grandad took me to my first palace game
And from then on I would never be the same
It was the thing that we did, just him and me
When I think of those times I’m full of glee
Hot chocolate and chips at half time
Even if palace weren’t in their prime
John would drive right up to the gate
Just so grandad wouldn’t have to walk or wait
He was seen by many of those who came
To treat everyone exactly the same
From Jamie or Alan to Linda or Val
He saw them all as his very best pal
As soon as I had learnt to walk
He had me out using a fork
Doing mums garden whilst she was ill
Knowing the flowers were her perfect pill
Nan will still enjoy his roses at home
A sign to say shes never alone
Aged 8, Grandad taught me to play dominoes,
But warned me never to cheat against my foes,
If I did, he told me once,
I’d be thrown thorough the window of the famous “Brick” pub!
Even when he was under the weather
He did all he could to make us feel better
A cheeky smile, on our daily visits
Mischievous jokes, and witty with it!
We loved our foreign family holidays,
Grandad took us for walks on cliffs above the waves
I’ll never forget how he stubbed his toe
As he looked down on the nudist beach below!
Mum and Nan looked after gramps every day
And he always had something he wanted to say
So from us to them on his behalf
They always did make him laugh
They were there till the very end
And his love to them will never end.
His infectious laughter – which was louder than most!
Will always fill the air of Lullarook Close
T’rah for now to our Gramps,
For the time we’ve had we give so much thanks,
As we raise a glass of your favourite scotch
We hope and pray you are able to watch
Us all here today saying farewell for now
As you take your final, very proud bow.
